Calhoun Gives Future Healthcare Professionals Hands-on Look at Medical Laboratory Careers
Today, representatives from Calhoun Community College welcomed prospective students, educators, and community members to its Huntsville Campus. The immersive Medical Laboratory Sciences Open House gave attendees a firsthand look at the vital role laboratory professionals play in healthcare.
Hosted in the Math, Science and CIS Building, the event highlighted Calhoun’s Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) programs through interactive lab tours, faculty meet-and-greets, and hands-on demonstrations.
Participants explored a variety of diagnostic areas, including chemistry, hematology, blood banking, immunology, microbiology, urinalysis, and coagulation. Visitors also had the opportunity to conduct laboratory simulations and learn how laboratory testing supports patient diagnosis and treatment.
“Our Medical Laboratory Sciences programs prepare students to collect and analyze blood and body fluids. Our results are used by healthcare providers to diagnose and treat patients,” said Reannon Wilkerson, Calhoun’s MLA/MLT Program Director. “This open house gave future students the opportunity to see our labs in action, meet our dedicated faculty, and better understand how these careers directly impact patient care.”
The event attracted high school students, parents, counselors, working adults, and healthcare professionals interested in advancing their careers in allied health.
Medical laboratory professionals often work behind the scenes, but their work is critical to the healthcare system. Through Calhoun’s programs, students gain the technical skills and clinical knowledge needed to pursue stable, meaningful careers in the medical field.
