The average citizen rarely questions the operations and complexity of a traffic signal.  This process is something most of us take for granted but thank goodness there are city, county, state and federal officials that understand the importance in keeping the related workforce up-to-date on these essential devices.

Traffic Signal operations play an important role in the safe and efficient movement of people, goods, and vehicles through our roadway systems.  The National Transportation Research Center (NTRC) has a unique learning environment, providing hands-on experience on traffic signal equipment and simulation learning tools.  For the first time, Traffic Signal Academy will hit the road to the Rocket City by bringing its mobile lab to The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) campus September 30-October 2, 2020.

The Academy will offer affordable education on many aspects of traffic signals focused on enhancing the design, operation, and maintenance capabilities of the transportation community.  Participants will have the opportunity to take courses over the span of three days on topics such as timing, detection, and advance operations, installation, maintenance, performance measures, and controller programming.

Former participant Mike Towles states, “The courses were very stimulating as well as motivating.  I had an opportunity to learn more about the work I do in a much simpler way.  The videos and visuals were very helpful and the manuals received contained important information for future references and guidance”.

Who should attend Academy?  Government employees, consulting engineers, technicians, and others involved in traffic signal design, operations, and maintenance with benefit from the Academy.  The materials provided service as a rich source of current information for individuals with different levels of experience in traffic signal operations.
Airton Kohls, lead instructor, works to emphasize the vision of the program and “to provide opportunity for a better transportation system through continuing education of traffic signal professionals of all levels”.

Listed on the Federal Highway Administration Arterial Management Program’s website, Traffic Signal Academy is a viable source of traffic signal training in the United States.  You don’t want to miss the opportunity to learn the industry trends and share information on traffic signal innovations and technology.

Interested participants should visit CPS.uah.edu/TrafficSignalAcademy to learn more information and to register for the event.  The three-day Academy is $895 and includes all course materials.  Investing in traffic signal training demonstrates a robust commitment to continuous improvement in the nation’s transportation system.
