Lifesouth Encourages Donors To Be Ready To Donate When Roads Are Safe
With winter weather impacting portions of North Alabama, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers has made the difficult decision to cancel some mobile blood drives and donor centers for staff and donor safety.
LifeSouth Madison locations on Madison Blvd and County Line Road are closed and all mobile drives in Huntsville and Athens have canceled for Monday and Tuesday.
LifeSouth Florence location on Veterans Blvd is closed and all mobile drives have been canceled for Monday and Tuesday.
LifeSouth Cullman location is closed for Monday and Tuesday.
LifeSouth Decatur and LifeSouth Albertville Centers have remained open for Monday and closed on Tuesday.
LifeSouth, like many blood centers across America, are in an emergency blood appeal. During an emergency appeal, local hospitals have less than a two day blood supply on their shelves. LifeSouth must collect more than 180 blood product donations every day for patients at 17 North Alabama hospitals, regardless of weather or holiday.
“On our books, we have projected for the next two days to draw 400 units,” Kelley McPhail, LifeSouth District Director said.
After a two day halt on blood donation, LifeSouth is urging all eligible donors to be ready to give once roads are passable.
“We are going to need an out pour of donors waiting at our doors ready to donate on Wednesday to makeup for a two day loss,” McPhail said.
There is no substitute for human blood, patients rely on blood donations from healthy individuals. Donating ensures blood will be available to help those who may be injured or need a blood transfusion to survive. Currently all blood types are needed, especially type O donors.
All blood donors receive a wellness screen prior to donation and each donation will be tested for COVID-19 antibodies. To find a blood drive close to you or to learn more about the donation process, call LifeSouth’s toll-free number, 1-888-795-2707 or make an appointment at www.lifesouth.org.
