Huntsville Museum of Art offering free admission on August 31 to celebrate reopening

Huntsville, Ala – The Huntsville Museum of Art (HMA) will reopen to the public on Sunday, Aug. 31, following several months of closure for facility upgrades. To celebrate the occasion, the museum will host the Betsy and Peter Lowe Community Free Day, offering free admission to all visitors from noon to 5 p.m.

The closure allowed for the installation of a new HVAC and humidity regulation system, which is critical to maintaining the industry-standard environmental conditions required to host exhibitions from galleries and museums around the world.

"We are incredibly grateful to Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and Huntsville City Council members, who support the investment in preserving the museum's collection," said HMA Executive Director Christopher Madkour. "The upgraded HVAC system will allow us to continue bringing high-quality exhibits to the North Alabama community. We already have several compelling shows lined up for 2025 and 2026, including the photography exhibit Days of Punk – Photographs by Michael Grecco, which opens on Oct. 17."

During the closure, museum staff also reimagined the layout of the galleries. Chief Curator Natalie Mault Mead led the redesign to better highlight the museum's permanent collection and enhance the presentation of rotating traveling exhibitions.

"Our aim was to create a space that feels both welcoming and thought-provoking," said HMA Chief Curator Natalie Mault Mead. "We approached the reinstallation with fresh eyes, considering not just what we show, but how and why. Whether you're visiting for the first time or the hundredth, we want the experience to spark new connections and invite deeper engagement with the art."

Museum hours are as follows:

  • Sunday: noon to 5 p.m.
  • Monday: Closed
  • Tuesday–Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. ($5 admission after 5 p.m.)
