Huntsville Ballet Company Cancels 2020 Performances

September 25, 2020
Due to recent health concerns for our performers, staff and community supporters of the Huntsville Ballet,  we are cancelling all our performances for 2020 including, and most importantly, The Nutcracker Ballet. This long-standing Rocket City family tradition has been performed by the Huntsville Ballet for the last 51 years, but because of current conditions regarding Covid-19, this is the first time these performances will be cancelled.
To ensure the health and safety of our patrons, dancers, employees and students, the Community Ballet Association / Huntsville Ballet Company has made the difficult decision to cancel all performances and events for the remainder of 2020. This includes fall performances scheduled for October and The Nutcracker scheduled for the VBC in December. The Huntsville Ballet School will continue operating during this time. We look forward to returning sometime in 2021 with the goal of bringing the Huntsville community the same quality performance they so richly deserve.
Statement from Artistic Director, Mr. Phillip Otto
“December of 2020 will mark the first time in 51 years that The Nutcracker will not be presented to the City of Huntsville. This is a sad and challenging time for everyone, but we felt this was the right thing to do considering the current health situation. The Huntsville Ballet Company relies entirely on grants, donations, sponsorships and ticket revenue from performances. Without help from this community, Huntsville’s only professional ballet company will continue to face additional cutbacks and our professional company may well cease to exist. We have worked very hard to build the ballet to its current level and we will strive to provide top quality professional dance to the Huntsville community. Please help us to make this desire a reality and Help Bridge the Ballet into a Brighter Future.”
Statement from Sherry Polk, CBA Board President
“The Huntsville Ballet Company’s audience is of great importance to us. With great pride I enjoyed watching the growth and development of this professional ballet company during my tenure as board president, because of current circumstances it is heartbreaking to lay off dancers and cancel performances. We take great pride in showcasing this beautiful art form and producing annual season traditions like The Nutcracker which has been enjoyed by thousands of North Alabamians over the years. Non-profit arts organizations like the Community Ballet Association have no contingency budgets in the case of unprecedented events like Covid-19. We are hoping that many of our devoted patrons, supporting corporations and the entire community will Help Bridge the Ballet through this pandemic.
Huntsville Ballet’s mission is to use the power of dance to inspire and nurture the art of classical ballet through artistic excellence, performance experiences and outreach activities in the community. Huntsville Ballet is growing along with the vibrant city of Huntsville, Alabama. As Huntsville’s premier ballet company since 1964, Huntsville Ballet holds a long and rich history in the art of dance. Each year The Nutcracker affords students from Huntsville Ballet School the opportunity to audition and perform with the Company at the VBC Concert Hall.
