Get Ready, North Alabama: James Spann Is Coming to Calhoun!
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Get ready, North Alabama! James Spann, Chief Meteorologist for ABC 33/40 and a household name in meteorology across Alabama, is coming to Calhoun Community College.
Spann will visit Calhoun’s Huntsville Campus on Tuesday, October 13, from noon to 1:00 p.m. as a guest speaker for a special community event hosted by the Calhoun Community College SkillsUSA Chapter. The event will take place in the Sparkman Main Foyer and is free and open to the public, as well as Calhoun students, faculty and staff.
For the past 50 years, Spann has built a distinguished career in broadcast meteorology, becoming not only a household name in the state of Alabama, but also a trusted voice that many rely on to stay safe during dangerous weather. His energetic personality, engaging communication style, and personal commitment to keeping the public weather-aware have made him a trusted and prominent figure, particularly during severe weather events when clear, timely communication matters most.
During his visit to Calhoun, Spann will share insights from his extensive career in broadcast meteorology, connecting his professional experiences to topics including leadership, professionalism, communication, and career readiness. He will discuss the importance of preparation, effective communication, and remaining calm under pressure, skills that are valuable across virtually every career field.
The event is especially meaningful for Calhoun’s SkillsUSA students, who are developing the technical, professional, and leadership skills needed to succeed not only in their annual competitions, but also in their future careers. Spann’s career provides a real-world example of how those skills can be applied to serve others and make a meaningful impact in the community.
“We are so excited to give our students and the community the opportunity to hear from someone who has dedicated 50 years to his profession and to serving the people of Alabama,” said Shandie Laseter, Calhoun Computer Information Systems Instructor and SkillsUSA Sponsor. “His career is a great example of what can be achieved through dedication, passion and a commitment to serving others. We hope our students, faculty, staff, and community members will come out, enjoy this special event, and be inspired by the experiences and stories he has to share.”
