Calhoun to host first-ever Miss Calhoun Community College and Miss Tennessee River's Teen scholarship pageant
Decatur, AL — Calhoun Community College is excited to announce its first-ever Miss Calhoun Community College and Miss Tennessee River’s Teen scholarship competitions. Both events will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at 6 p.m., in the Performing Arts Recital Hall at the Alabama Center for the Arts in downtown Decatur. These pageants serve as preliminaries for the state-level competitions. The winner of Miss Calhoun Community College will advance to the Miss Alabama competition in June 2025, while the winner of Miss Tennessee River’s Teen will compete in March 2025 at the Miss Alabama’s Teen Competition.
According to Dr. April Nunn, Calhoun Speech Instructor and Director of the Miss Calhoun Scholarship Pageant Program, last fall, college administrators, faculty, and staff met with Miss Alabama representatives and determined that hosting a Miss Calhoun Community College Scholarship Program would provide a wealth of opportunities for its students.
“Our goal is to offer a wide-variety of scholarship opportunities that will help advance the education of our current and potential students,” commented Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun Community College President. “After meeting with Miss Alabama representatives, we were convinced that creating such a program would provide a unique scholarship opportunity not only for our female students, aged 18-27, who could benefit from financial assistance, but it also allows us to reach young women as early as age 14. This exposure to our educational programs and the opportunity to begin saving for scholarships is a significant investment in their futures,” added Hodges.
The scholarship program is designed to help young women build confidence, develop leadership skills, engage in community service, and showcase their talents. Programs like this foster a sense of sisterhood, helping participants forge lifelong bonds and meaningful friendships.
“We are incredibly excited to launch this scholarship program, which offers a transformative experience for students,” said Nunn. “Our goal is to empower these young women by offering programming to further enhance their talents, leadership potential, and community engagement experiences, while providing financial support to help them achieve their educational goals. We’re eager to see bright futures ahead for our contestants,” added Nunn.
The contestant crowned as Miss Calhoun Community College will receive a one-year, in-kind academic scholarship, and Miss Tennessee River’s Teen will receive a one-year, in-kind academic scholarship to Calhoun Community College upon high school graduation, contingent upon institutional requirements. Monetary gifts will be awarded to the first runner-up for Miss Calhoun Community College and Miss Tennessee River’s Teen, Talent Winners, and Best in Community Service Initiative for each.
