Calhoun Community College’s Youngest Student Returns after Remarkable Freshman Year

When classes begin this fall at Calhoun Community College, one familiar face will once again be walking the halls, proving that determination and a love for learning have no age limit.

Just one year after making history as Calhoun's youngest student ever admitted, 13-year-old Van-Houston McMillion is returning to campus following an exceptional freshman year. Accepted to the college at just 11 years old and enrolling at 12, he completed his first year with a 3.5 GPA, earned Dean's List honors, and gained far more than college credit.

"Overall, it was an incredible experience," Van-Houston said. "Starting college at 13 wasn't a typical path, but it ended up being a great one. I came in not knowing what to expect, and by the end of the year I felt much more confident as both a student and a person."

Like many first-year college students, Van-Houston quickly learned that success required discipline, consistency, and time management.

"Academically, I learned that consistency matters far more than cramming," he said. "Personally, I learned how important time management is. Nobody is going to remind you to do your work. You have to hold yourself accountable."

The experience also confirmed his passion for chemistry. This fall, he looks forward to taking Organic Chemistry I, one of the discipline's most challenging courses.

"If anything, my interest has grown even stronger," he said. "Every chemistry course has made me more excited about continuing in the field."

Although he entered classrooms with students several years older than himself, Van-Houston said he quickly felt accepted.

"Everyone was surprisingly welcoming," he said. "Once people got past the initial surprise of my age, they treated me just like any other student."

He also credits Calhoun's faculty for helping make his first year a success.

"I was surprised by how supportive the professors were," he said. "They were always willing to answer questions and never made me feel like I was bothering them."

For EmmaSara McMillion, watching her son complete his first year of college has been about much more than academic achievement.

"Watching our son begin college at 12 years old and, by 13, earn a place on the Dean's List has been an incredible milestone," McMillion said. "But even more meaningful has been watching him develop the confidence, discipline, and character that will serve him for the rest of his life."

Calhoun Community College President Dr. Jimmy Hodges said Van-Houston's success reflects both the student's determination and the opportunities community colleges provide.

"When Van-Houston enrolled at Calhoun, he made history as our youngest student, but what has impressed us most isn't his age. It's his determination, discipline, and commitment to excellence," Hodges said. "His success demonstrates that when students are given opportunities to challenge themselves and are supported by dedicated faculty and staff, extraordinary things can happen. We are incredibly proud of all he has accomplished during his first year and look forward to watching him continue to grow as a scholar and future leader."

As he prepares to begin his second year, Van-Houston hopes his experience encourages other academically advanced students to pursue opportunities that may seem unconventional.

"If you're academically ready and genuinely love to learn, don't let your age hold you back," he said. "Work hard, ask questions, and follow what you're passionate about."
