About Us

Madison County is located in the heart of the Tennessee Valley, in the north central portion of Alabama. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 388,153, making it the third-most populous county in Alabama. Its county seat is Huntsville.
Madison County was established on December 13, 1808. It is recognized as the ''birthplace'' of the state of Alabama, which was admitted to the Union on December 14, 1819. The governing body of the county, an elected board, was developed from an administrative court in 1821. The act of 1821 provided for the election of four commissioners of roads and revenue, to serve one-year terms. Since 1988, the County Commission has been composed of seven members. The Chairman is elected at-large. Six Commissioners are elected by voters in each of the County's six districts. All serve four-year terms.
