MEMBER EVENT: Tony Award-winning “Red” by John Logan
"A painting is not a picture of an experience, but is the experience” - Mark Rothko
About the Play:
Artist Mark Rothko is in his New York studio circa 1958/59, having been commissioned to paint a group of murals for the expensive and exclusive Four Seasons Restaurant. He gives orders to his assistant, Ken, as he mixes the paints, makes the frames and primes the canvases. Ken, however, eventually brashly questions Rothko's theories of art and his acceding to work on such a commercial project. The question “What do you see?” frames the narrative on modern art and its place in the world.
“Red” by John Logan is directed by Bill Hubscher, assisted by Art Walthall. The cast includes George Kobler as Mark Rothko and Christian Daschle as Ken. The stage managers are Amanda Manos and Birdie Jones. It won the 2010 Tony Award and the 2010 Drama League Award for Best Play and Distinguished Production of a Play, respectively, and is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.
