Systems Engineering for Aerospace & Defense Systems Workshop

This workshop presents engineering students, practitioners, team leaders and program/project managers with the major concepts and methods involved in applying system engineering to the management of technology programs/projects especially in the aerospace and defense domains. It emphasizes defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, writing good requirements, developing and maintaining program communication tools including program plans and development artifacts, employing an iterative design synthesis approach using trade studies and analytical decision making, defining and executing verification and validation methods to ensure the system meets customer requirements, and considering all aspects of the product lifecycle throughout the development process such as cost, schedule, testing, production/manufacturing, system performance, operations and end-of-life/disposal.

The workshop is designed to prepare participants to think and evaluate the critical issues involved in systems and their management from an industry and government engineering point of view. The workshop includes an introduction to Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) including its benefits and available tools and resources. Through in-class exercises and real-world examples from industry and government in the aerospace and defense domains, it enhances learning the concepts, principles, processes and tools for an integrated program and systems engineering management approach needed to successfully execute complex programs today. It prepares participants with a foundational understanding for applying systems engineering on the job.
