This presentation by a local, retired pharmacist, describes how our nation’s opioid epidemic began with prescription abuse and how it has evolved into what it is today. She will discuss prescription drugs that are commonly abused, as well as signs and symptoms of abuse. She will also review how legislation has changed and describe programs developed to curb the problem of over-prescribing doctors and doctor shopping.
Since teens indicate that their home medicine cabinet is the most likely source for drugs, she will cover safe storage and disposal of medications. The program will address the rise in abuse of cheaper, illicit substances such as heroin and the even more potent fentanyl and will offer advise on what individuals can do to help someone who has overdosed on opioids.
