Please join us for our next Citizens Academy event on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at 6 p.m., at Alabama A & M University. As you are aware, the City has been conducting a comprehensive master planning effort which we are calling "The Big Picture." This 18-month effort provides us an opportunity to examine how we as a community support growth and development, and to have a dialogue about what we want our city to look like in the coming decades. A big part of this study is looking at how we revitalize struggling parts of our city, and how we proactively prevent disinvestment from occurring in neighborhoods that are at this point very stable and healthy.
To that end, this Citizens Academy will be focused on Neighborhood Revitalization. Any community can experience disinvestment. Houses age. Shops close. Parking lots empty. Cities all across America experience this up-and-down cycle. Yet, there are tools we can utilize to help reverse and mitigate these trends, strategies that can promote reinvestment, and ways to create public and private partnerships that encourage new and better development. While any community may experience a downturn, every community CAN take steps forward towards revitalization.
We hope that you will join us at this important event on Tuesday, October 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ernest L. Knight Center (4900 Meridian Street) on the campus of Alabama A & M. This event is open to the public, so please share it with your constituents and neighbors post to social media. A poster is attached. We will have two guest speakers who will present on why disinvestment occurs, how redevelopment works, and what a community can do to set itself up for the future. Afterwards, we?ll have breakout sessions to discuss what we've heard, and look at places where we can start taking action. Thank you for sharing your vision for the future of Huntsville.
