MEMBER EVENT: Heart for the Homeless Urban Iditarod

A loose parody of a famous Alaska dog sled race, we take the format and mix it up. Replace the dogs with people (you and your friends), and the sleds with shopping carts, add in team themes, costumes, contests, and a food and fundraising drive ... and we get the Heart for the Homeless Urban Iditarod.

Hundreds of women, men, teenagers, superheroes, rock bands, Greeks, elephants, tigers, volunteers, and excited philanthropists gather to create this amazingly unique costumed charity shopping cart race of epic proportions. Teams of six heavily-costumed humanoids, raising Food and Funds for the purpose of changing lives of the homeless and hurting in Huntsville, all while racing tricked-out shopping carts through the frigid streets of downtown Huntsville. There's no event like this anywhere in the South.

If you like road races, 5Ks, adventures and costumes, you'll love the Heart for the Homeless Urban Iditarod. Objectives:

• Have Fun!!
• Bring in as much food and funds as possible for Downtown Rescue Mission and its ministries
• Create a unique and incredible team "theme" for your doggies and cart.
• Complete the race through Downtown Huntsville
• Get your team of 6 "doggies" together and SIGN UP!  Then, start working on your team theme and how you'll raise food and funds for the competition.
• Onlookers, spectators, and the curious pedestrians can also participate by throwing clothing donations into large laundry carts as they roll by them during the race. These clothes will be donated to our area Thrift Stores who financially support our ministry!
