Neil Thurgood\, USA\, Retired\, is the Special Advisor to the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) President for Military Affairs and Technology. Before his appointment at UAH\, he served as the Director for Hypersonics\, Directed Energy\, Space\, and Rapid Acquisition in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army at Redstone Arsenal\, Ala.\n\n\n\nIn this role\, LTG Thurgood was responsible for the fielding of select capabilities to deter rapidly modernizing adversaries. He oversaw the development of an Army Long Range Hypersonic Weapon and led the Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office in the development lifecycle of critical technologies consistent with the Army's modernization priorities.\n\n\n\nPrior to this role\, LTG Thurgood served as the Director for Test at the Missile Defense Agency\, Redstone Arsenal\, Ala. He also served as Deputy Commander for the Combined Security Transition Command in Afghanistan from 2017 to 2018\, following his position as Deputy for Acquisition and Systems Management at the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition\, Logistics\, and Technology) in Washington\, D.C.\n\n\n\nLTG Thurgood enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1983\, becoming an Aviation Branch Officer in 1986. He served in various roles and combat deployments\, including with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Transitioning to the Army Acquisition Corps in 1995\, he held key positions\, including project manager in the Utility Helicopters Office and later leading the PEO for Missiles and Space at Redstone Arsenal\, contributing to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
